TIPPY-TOE WALKERS

Our grand-daughter, Lizzie, and our niece, Gracia, are both tippy-toe walkers. It doesn't sound like a bad thing, but when a person walks on tiptoes all the time, the tendons in the foot and leg do not develop correctly and, over time, it becomes more and more difficult to put the heel down. It is not clearly understood if children walk on tiptoes because a tendon is too short or if the tendon becomes too short because they've developed the habit of walking on their tiptoes.

Gracia had surgery to correct the problem when she was young. Lizzie has been seeing doctors about the situation. Yesterday Elly took Lizzie to Salt Lake City's Shriner's Hospital to pick up some braces that Lizzie will wear at night. With exercise and the time spent in braces, the doctor hopes to see improvement without having to resort to surgery.
